CAN WE BECOME RICH BY GIVING?

Giving generously of what we have and sharing with others is as old as humanity itself. But the concept of tithing, specifically giving 10% of our income, began as a biblical concept. It appears many times in the Old Testament as a formula given by God for success and happiness. It’s not necessary to be religious for the principles to work, although you may become more spiritual through the practice.

So, can we become rich by giving?

Before we dive in, let’s define rich. We usually think of a millionaire or a billionaire, someone who could affect great good in the world through the power of finance, although we know these individuals can also do great harm. Rich could also mean a life of grace and ease. Or a life with minimal requirements and plenty of time to daydream and be with family and friends. How about an abundant life surrounded by nature and its bounty?

Although this article addresses finance, in particular, it can be applied to any definition of prosperity. You can tithe time, food or service as well as money. Whatever you want more of is what you give away, although once you begin you will eventually find yourself hooked by the sheer pleasure of it and not just as a recipe for prosperity.

Give and it shall be given unto you

~ Luke 6:38

John D. Rockefeller Sr. began tithing with the first dollar he made as a small boy. Did his dedication to tithing help him become the billionaire he grew to be? I think so and he certainly did. He continued to tithe 10% of his income his entire life. By the time he was 80 he was giving away $138,000,000 a year.

In 2008 Harvard and the University of British Columbia created a study with 632 Americans analysing the emotional effects of spending. It revealed that those who spend more on others have a greater level of overall happiness. The study recommended, “encouraging people to invest income in others rather than themselves may be worthwhile in the service of translating increased national wealth into increased national happiness.”

During the Great Depression, Dallin Oaks, an American attorney, jurist, author, professor, and religious leader, observed that “those who tithe tended to keep their employment, enjoy good health and be free from the most devastating effects of economic and spiritual depression.” Mutual Fund pioneer John Templeton noted in the more than 100,000 families he counselled in investment, greater prosperity in those who tithed than among those who didn’t.

As a man sows, so shall he reap

~ Galatians 6:7

Andrew Carnegie began his working life as a young immigrant working as a bobbin boy, changing spools of thread for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for $2. He went on to build a steel empire. In his essay “The Gospel of Wealth” he wrote that wealth should be distributed to promote welfare and enrich society. Carnegie gave away more than $350,000,000, 90% of his fortune. Dmitri Chavkerov, president of ForexPeaceArmy.com. the internet’s most reliable website for information about the Forex industry, says tithing is the foundation upon which successful trading is based. He states, “The walls and floor of my forex structure are money management and trading psychology. The roof is various trading strategies. However, the foundation is tithing—giving 10% of my income to charity.” He now donates 50% of his income and more.

If you tithe, your life will start becoming more harmonious. It will spread to your ability to make money, but it will also spread to all areas of your life.

~ Dmitri Chavkerov

As a young man, Dmitri asked his advisor Master Choa Kok Sui how he could become a millionaire. The master replied, “Donate 10% of your income, save 30% of your income, and practice meditation on prosperity every day for one year and you will be a millionaire by 30.” Master Choa Kok Sui stated that tithing was the most important part. It worked.

We don’t need to want to become millionaires to begin applying the principles of tithing. Lack of prosperity is one of the greatest problems in our world today. There is terrible inequality and money is controlled by the few. But it can be a spiritual practice to become rich and be able to nurture others. We certainly can’t help ourselves or others by remaining poor.

When you see something wrong in the world you are the one to fix it.

~ Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach

Tithing is an act of honouring the source of our supply, whether you call it God, the universe or the flow of energy. It’s an act of gratitude and gratitude expands what we are grateful for.

So, what are the principals behind tithing? Is it that receiving and giving create a universal flow? Or that feeling greater happiness and well-being through charitable acts creates an attitude of prosperity that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy? Do we create a thought pattern of abundance by giving, an act of trust in our supply, therefore activating the Law of Attraction, a proven scientific and metaphysical principle?

Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.

~ Albert Einstein

There is nothing more spiritual than prosperity, because prosperity is the touching, feeling, tasting of alignment.

~ Abraham Hicks

These are Ghandi’s words, one of our greatest spiritual leaders: “Whenever you are in doubt, or when the ‘self’ becomes too much with you, apply the following test: recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore his control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to independence for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and … ‘self’ melting away.”

Tony Robbins, one of the leading self-help gurus, now worth $5billion, has provided over one hundred million meals for Americans and aims to double that next year. If we are abundant we can do what our governments are not doing. We can right the wrongs we see. If we are impoverished we are part of the problem.

Seek ye first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness and all else will be added unto you.

~ Matthew 6:3

What does this mean? Just as Abraham Hicks stated, if we are in alignment with our source of life, then the flow of abundance will happen, as long as we are not mentally blocking it by our thoughts and emotions. Jesus stated the Kingdom is within. That place where the divine dwells on the throne of your heart. Allow the abundance to flow, welcome it, call it in. But don’t get attached. That’s when great people can become greedy, fearful hoarders who may exploit others for their personal gain and cause harm. This is where a spiritual approach to prosperity is valuable. We learn to trust the supply and our ability through our thoughts, words and actions, to manifest it. Giving 10% away ensures right attitude as well as the benefits.

Personally, I have always been a big tither. It’s an understatement to say I have yet to accumulate vast wealth. However, I somehow always have enough and there have been quite a few unexpected boons along the way. Often at the 11th hour. Sometimes in the 11th hour and 59th minute! It hasn’t been my focus. Spiritual people often have an awkward relationship with money. But money is neutral. It’s a form of energy. It can be used for good or bad. I’ve been one of those spiritual types who has been conflicted about it. I’ve seen what wrong action around money can do.

But, hey, if we want to be part of the solution and help make some big changes in our world it’s a very handy thing to have! I’ve changed my attitude vastly. Wherever your heart and mind is with prosperity, try a 6-month experiment of tithing the first 10% pre-tax of your income and see what happens, no matter how small that income may be.

WARNING: May Cause Miracles!!

Since words are creative, I can gather my Manna through speaking forth definite, rich words of supply, even in the face of lack.

~ Catherine Ponder

This is a decree from Catherine Ponder who has written and taught prosperity for decades, more than 50 years. Say this daily while you trial tithing.

I AM SURROUNDED BY DIVINE SUBSTANCE AND THIS DIVINE SUBSTANCE NOW MANIFESTS FOR ME IN RICH APPROPRIATE FORM. MY ACCUMULATED GOOD OF PAST AND PRESENT NOW POURS FORTH INTO MY LIFE AS RICH BLESSINGS. THIS IS A TIME OF DIVINE FULFILLMENT. I WELCOME MY ACCUMULATED GOOD NOW. I GIVE THANKS FOR DIVINE RESTORATION IN MIND, BODY AND AFFAIRS. DIVINE LOVE IS NOW WORKING THROUGH ME TO ADJUST ALL THE DETAILS OF MY LIFE. LOVE TRANSFORMS MY LIFE NOW.

Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there be food in My house, and prove Me now in this, said the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

~ Malachi 3:10

Sending you bright blessings of abundance.
